Minute Masterclass Episode 227

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench. If you enjoy our minute masterclasses, consider continuing your professional development as a student in our Foundations Course for Early Childhood Dance Educators and as a member of our DiscoverDance Experience online community. You can learn more about both of these opportunities at DiscoverDance.com.

This week we are starting a new series called the DiscoverDance Dictionary.

We’re going to define the top terms we use often around here so you can better understand why we do what we do, in the way we do it.  Let’s start with brain-based learning. Brain-based learning refers to teaching methods and best practices based on the latest scientific research on how the brain learns. When we refer to research from early childhood educators and child development experts, we learn how to create a thriving learning environment where our students flourish. Ever since leaning into what science and experts are telling us about children, my classroom has evolved, as it should, to reflect the current findings. One of the most exciting findings that dance teachers always knew but didn’t have any data to back it up, is that movement is how children learn. Imagine how packed our studios would be if every caregiver knew how important movement is for their little one! But, I digress. When you teach through a brain-based approach, you are open and willing to change and evolve for the benefit of the developing child.
